IIT Kanpur Breaks Records with 122 Innovative Creations in 2023
In a groundbreaking achievement, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) marked its third consecutive year of setting a new record in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) submissions. In 2023, the institution showcased its commitment to cutting-edge research and innovation by filing a remarkable 122 IPRs. This achievement brings the total count of IPRs to an impressive 1,039.
This surge in filings includes 108 patents, four design registrations, three copyrights, and one trademark application. Noteworthy is the fact that IIT Kanpur also secured four US patents and two Chinese patents. During the same year, 167 IPRs were granted, and 15 technologies were licensed, reflecting the tangible impact of the institute’s work in the real world.
Prof. S Ganesh, Director of IIT Kanpur, expressed his excitement, stating, “We are proud to continue our momentum with a record-breaking 122 IPRs filed. This is the third consecutive year with over 100 filings, showcasing our commitment to pushing the boundaries of research and technology. The collaborative spirit among our researchers and support from diverse stakeholders have been instrumental in reaching this milestone.”
These patents span various technologies, from MedTech to Nano Technology, encompassing groundbreaking healthcare solutions such as a portable medical suction device and a continuous lung health monitoring system. Additionally, there are patents for solid-state sodium-ion batteries and a cost-effective Braille learning device for the visually impaired.
In the calendar year, IIT Kanpur witnessed a significant rise in granted IPRs. Among them are a gas sensor for detecting ammonia at room temperature, a method and apparatus for treating industrial wastewater, a tactile watch designed for the visually impaired, and a lateral flow immunoassay strip for detecting mastitis in bovines. The IIT Kanpur Office for IP and Technology Transfer, as emphasized in the institute’s announcement, serves a crucial function in connecting the academic and business realms.
The statement further emphasizes the strategic role of the IP and Technology Transfer Office: “This office not only files the highest number of IPRs but also facilitates increased technology transfer transactions. The unwavering commitment of the institute to elevate the nation’s research and development landscape and its focus on delivering impactful inventions at the grassroots level are significant contributors to the overall surge in IPR filings for IIT Kanpur.”
