Ganguly Backs Rohit for T20 Leadership, Dravid’s Tenure Extended
In a recent development, former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has thrown his support behind Rohit Sharma, suggesting that Sharma should lead India in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Ganguly praised Sharma’s performance in the ODI World Cup and emphasized the importance of both Sharma and Virat Kohli taking a break to return refreshed for the busy schedule ahead.
Ganguly, also the former president of the BCCI, believes that once Rohit Sharma returns to playing all formats, he should take up the captaincy role due to his stellar performance in the World Cup. He expressed confidence that Sharma’s leadership will be crucial for Indian cricket.
Reflecting on the break taken by Kohli and Sharma, Ganguly acknowledged the demanding nature of the cricket calendar, expressing satisfaction that the duo will return for the Tests in South Africa. He highlighted the need for players to rejuvenate themselves, especially after the pressures of a World Cup.
While there was uncertainty regarding Kohli and Sharma’s participation in the T20 World Cup, Ganguly asserted that Sharma, being a natural leader, is expected to continue as captain until the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies.
Switching gears, Ganguly also shared his thoughts on the extension of Rahul Dravid’s contract as India’s head coach. He expressed happiness over Dravid’s tenure extension, commending his coaching during Ganguly’s BCCI presidency. Ganguly conveyed optimism about India’s prospects in the next World Cup under Dravid’s guidance.
Addressing the exclusion of Test specialists Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane from the South Africa series, Ganguly acknowledged the inevitability of introducing new talent. He thanked Pujara and Rahane for their contributions to Indian cricket, recognizing the selectors’ decision to infuse fresh faces into the squad.
In conclusion, Ganguly remains hopeful that India, with the right leadership and fresh talent infusion, will break their title drought at ICC global events and cross the bridge to victory one day.
